Somalia’s Flagship Internet & ICT Gathering – Since 2015
Every year, SomNOG brings together network operators, systems administrators, cybersecurity practitioners, software developers, academics, policymakers, and Internet stakeholders for an intensive week of hands-on technical workshops, specialist tutorials, and a high-level conference – Somalia’s flagship gathering for the Internet and ICT community, running for over a decade.
Format
The event runs across several days each year:
- Technical Workshops – several days of lab-driven, hands-on training across parallel tracks such as Network Infrastructure, Systems & Services, and Software Development, with a practice-heavy curriculum.
- Tutorials Day – focused specialist sessions on high-demand topics: recent editions have covered Cloud Computing on AWS, Wireless Campus Networking, CI/CD (Code to Cloud), and Online Trust & Safety.
- Conference – a full day (or two) of keynotes, panel discussions, and networking, bringing together government, industry, academia, and the international development community alongside the technical community.
A decade of impact
At SomNOG8 (December 2025, Mogadishu), organized jointly with SomaliREN and the Internet Society Somalia Chapter, workshop applications outstripped available places more than 5:1, and conference applications outstripped capacity more than 4:1. Across the three workshop tracks and four specialist tutorials, 106 professionals were trained in seven technical domains – from network infrastructure and Linux systems to software development, cloud computing, and online safety – and 250 delegates attended the conference, including Somalia’s State Minister of Communication and Technology, who opened the event and recognized SomNOG’s ten-year contribution to the country’s digital development.
